Tech giants like Apple, Facebook, and Google are looking to the next generation of workers to be the ones to drive the digital transformation, but it’s a job market where many have struggled to find the right talent.
While these companies are all investing heavily in AI to help them automate their workflows, some workers are finding the challenge in navigating the new technology to make the most of their talents.
One of those is an American named Chris, who works as a data scientist at an engineering firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He says that in his 30-year career, he’s never seen a workplace where people with different technical backgrounds were able to get along in the same way.
“It’s just kind of been really hard to get a good grasp of the skills,” Chris said.
Chris started his career at Google as a web developer and is now a senior data scientist.
In addition to developing and maintaining their own artificial intelligence (AI) systems, Google also uses machine learning to help the company build and maintain their own data and analytics systems.
The company uses this data to help improve the way it analyzes and processes data, making it easier to understand the company’s user-generated content.
Chris says he never felt that Google was working for him or that the company treated him as an equal.
But he found that this wasn’t always the case.
“A lot of the tech guys, they think, ‘Oh, you’re just going to come over to the office and have coffee with me,’ ” he said.
“I was always like, ‘No, we’re going to work with you.
That culture didn’t help him adapt to a new technology.””
The tech companies Chris worked for had a culture where people weren’t really listening to what they had to say, he says.
That culture didn’t help him adapt to a new technology.”
They just looked at what I had to put in and I wasn’t the type of person to really say what I wanted to say,” Chris recalled.”
I’m a nerd, so I wasn- I just wanted to talk to a human being, and I just wasn’t really into that,” Chris added.
I was like, You don’t understand. “
People always told me, ‘You’re just a geek.’
I was like, You don’t understand.
This is my talent, this is my skill, I have to be able to say what you’re talking about, and you’re trying to do that.”
While he doesn’t agree with the stereotype that tech companies are a place where “the nerds are the bad guys,” Chris believes that he and his peers have had to deal with it.
“We just need to accept that.
There’s just not a lot of support.
They’ll always say, ‘Why don’t you do what you want to do?
You’re not like the nerds, you just need a job.’
But there’s no support, no guidance,” Chris explained.
While tech companies like Google and Facebook have been experimenting with the use of artificial intelligence to improve their workforces, it’s hard to find any data that shows the company is actually working for them.
“Google is one of the few companies that I’m aware of that’s actually hiring a lot more AI talent than people realize,” Chris told Vice.
“They’re hiring a ton of new people.
I don’t know what the company thinks they’re doing, but they’re really doing it.”
Chris says that he’s not just trying to find a job in tech.
He’s also looking for ways to work on his passions in science and technology.
“My wife and I are going to be going to the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science next week, and we want to work together to get this technology to do something useful for us,” Chris revealed.
